Yesterday I washed my last batch of plums, wow! That was a job, but I learned a lot and know what to expect and do differently next year. Now we move onto the pears, then the apples…harvest season is taking on a whole new meaning for me this year!
This plum butter was inspired by my sister in-law Amie. She made a batch and gave me a jar, which disappeared before she made it home! I had to make more, I had more I wanted to do with it and my jar was gone. Plum butter is very versatile! You can eat it out of the jar with a spoon, smear it on bread, mix it into yogurt, top it with granola, swirl it into a cake…the list could go on, needless to say, it’s yummy and you need some in your life!
Be sure the taste the plum butter before you sweeten it. The sweetness of the plums you start with as well as the sweetness of the pears will greatly affect the amount of sugar or other sweetener you need to add. You can always pour more in, but it’s nearly impossible to take it out, so be careful! I also gave you a choice of sweeteners to use, add it what works well for your lifestyle. I love xylitol and stevia as sugar replacements, but you could also use honey or regular white sugar, it’s up to you. Have fun and enjoy! Happy plums!
Cinnamon Plum Butter
- 4 cups plums, pitted
- 2 pears, cored and sliced
- 1/4 cup chia seeds
- 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/3-1/2 cup xylitol, sugar, or 2-3 packets of stevia (adjust sweetness as desired)
Place the plums and pears in a medium sauce pan and heat to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, or until the fruit is cooked down a bit.
Remove the fruit from the heat and stir in the chia seeds, cinnamon, and vanilla. Add in your sweetener of choice, tasting as you go until your desired sweetness is achieved.
Pour the mixture into a blender (be careful not to burn yourself!) and blend until desired consistency is reached. Store in jars in the refrigerator or freezer.
Are you able to water bath this recipe? ?
Yes, but I’m not sure why you would want to or need to.
I just realized, do you mean to can it?
